Jason & Justine Martinez

Missionaries, Because Justice Matters

Jason and Justine Martinez serve with Because Justice Matters in San Francisco through the Azul & Wildflour program, supporting and resourcing young adults through workforce training, inner-life development, and mentoring.

After 17 years of ministry in the Tenderloin, Jason and Justine launched the Azul & Wildflour program as a nine-month cohort experience for young adults ages 18–24 who have faced childhood instability and systemic barriers. Through the program, they provide practical workforce training, inner-life development, and mentorship, helping participants build thriving futures. Many young people in San Francisco navigate complex challenges, including aging out of foster care, family instability, limited access to education, and systemic barriers to sustainable employment. The Azul program equips them with marketable skills, professional networks, and opportunities for inner healing.

The program includes hands-on culinary education through Wildflour catering events, where participants specialize in artisan pizza-making and gain real-world work experience and skills that can open doors to future employment. Group sessions and one-on-one mentorship also help participants process trauma, explore personal and cultural values, and develop sustainable healing practices. Through creative expression, young adults are encouraged to discover their voices and envision new paths ahead. By graduation each May, participants leave with practical work experience, professional references, and a renewed sense of possibility for their lives.

Jason and Justine also raise their three children in San Francisco. As spiritual directors, they integrate contemplative practices and soul care into multiple aspects of their life and work, believing that true transformation addresses both practical needs and the inner life. Justine also develops her own artistic practice and connects participants with the San Francisco art community, using creativity as a tool for healing and self-expression.
